Treat Others....

As we neared the end of the 1982 baseball  season, I decided to check on the cards I wanted to keep as   possible inventory for a future store I was thinking of opening. There  were established stars like Brett, Yount and Reggie. There were also “Future Star” cards of unknown rookies like Cal Ripken, Steve Sax, Johnny Ray and Kent Hrbek.

I had many of the “Future Stars” cards, so I decided to try to send cards for autographs. I sent three cards to each  player. I asked them to sign two and they could keep one  for themselves. Much to my  surprise, I  received all the cards back, neatly signed.  Currently, one of  each card, is in my personal autograph collection.

I realized, that if you were polite and did not abuse the players, you would probably  get your request granted.

In “This Collector’s Opinion”  it was a reminder to treat  others,  the way you want others to treat you.

Those Were The Days...

So here we are, back at Barry’s Stamp Shop on Prince St. for my weekly dose of cards. Barry Rickert, who I considered a stamp  expert, was a  fellow fire fighter, so I knew when his store would be  open. At the time, he was the only “card store”  in the city.

As I would trade cards with Barry and others, we used the “Sport Americana Baseball Card Price Guide” by Dr. James Beckett as a guide if there were any questions.   At the time, this was a yearly  guide.  Most trades though we made, were made on trust, not on the card value. We traded  on what we felt the cards meant to us. The guide, was just that, “A GUIDE”.

The card store became  a regular  meeting place in the afternoons for collectors. There, I met some good friends and rekindled some old friendships. Those friends are still friends today.

The Beginning...

In 1982, my boyhood hobby of collecting  baseball cards had a new beginning for me. At the ripe old age of 29,  I visited a friend’s card store, located in a garage, on Prince St. in Danbury, Ct.

That day, I purchased a pack of cards for 30 cents. Inside of the pack, I found a card of New York Yankees Star and future Hall of Famer, Reggie  Jackson.  It was Topps card #300. I fell in  love with the  hobby again that day.

Today, some 33  years later, I am still collecting. In this blog, titled “One Collector’s Opinion” I hope to take you back into an earlier era of the hobby.  How did you get started?  Feel free to leave a note in the comments.
